At DataKind on 7th November 2018 I am speaking to a charity who would like to build a map tool that works in a similar way to the one on http://www.domesticabusemigration.co.uk/.
That site includes the code for the map. The code helpfully links to the following resources which helped the developer to make it:
- https://github.com/alignedleft/d3-book/blob/master/chapter_14/05_choropleth.html
- https://bost.ocks.org/mike/map/
- http://blockbuilder.org/jessihamel/9648495
I've asked a few people for some additional tools and resources:
- https://www.mapbox.com/help/choropleth-studio-gl-pt-1/: Mapbox is a tool for creating embeddable maps without code, it looks like one of their tutorials may cover "chloropleths".
- https://medium.com/@mbostock/command-line-cartography-part-1-897aa8f8ca2c: A tutorial on making this kind of map with D3.
- https://carto.com/platform/vector-mapping-cartography/: A powerful library for maps recommended in the DataKind slack channel.
It may be that building this themselves is not an option for the charity. There's a few agencies and developers who may be able to help and who have a track record for this kind of work.
