TPM provides zero practical security

TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is as useful for preventing real attackers as the TSA is at preventing real terrorists. The architecture is fundamentally flawed and most existing implementations are completely broken. I thought this argument was settled decades ago[1] when "trusted computing" was introduced mostly as a way to provide DRM and ownership capabilities to organizations. It has largely failed to impact the consumer market when it was introduced back in the early 2000s. However, recently there seems to be a movement by certain parties to reintroduce this failed product back to the market. Encypted LUKS LVM Btrfs Root with Opt-in State on NixOS

I'm trying to follow this guide to install NixOS using Btrfs, LUKS and LVM. The main usage of this page for me will be remembering what I did! My laptop is ASUS ROG GL553VD.

Just downloaded Plasma Desktop, 64bit and create a bootable Flash Drive. Then boot up to NixOS Live CD. Using gparted to create two partitions, One 200MB vfat EFI partittion and the rest of SSD drive will be an encrypted partition.

Setting up NixOs with LUKS encrypted root

Here are my working notes on getting a system up and running.

WARNING: You can run into a hidden problem that will prevent a correct partition setup and /etc/nixos/configuration.nix from working: if you are setting up a UEFI system, then you need to make sure you boot into the NixOS installation from the UEFI partition of the bootable media. You may have to enter your BIOS boot selection menu to verify this. For example, if you setup a NixOS installer image on a flash drive, your BIOS menu may display several boot options from that flash drive: choose the one explicitly labeled with “UEFI”.

Overview of the NixOS X11 session modules

How X11 is started

In the following example, sddm will be used as a display manager. The process is however similar for other display managers in nixpkgs and a summary that applies to all nixpkgs display managers is given at the end.

  1. Systemd unit "display-manager.service" starts services.x11.displayManager.job.execCmd (the display manager)

  2. services.x11.displayManager.job.execCmd is set to the path of the sddm binary from the sddm package in the nix store. So SDDM will start and read its configuration from /etc/sddm.conf.

What forces layout / reflow

All of the below properties or methods, when requested/called in JavaScript, will trigger the browser to synchronously calculate the style and layout*. This is also called reflow or layout thrashing, and is common performance bottleneck.
