Open GIS Datasets

Collection of useful links (primarily UIK focused) for publicly available GIS datasets.

Ordnance Survey

OS OpenData

Contains links, including API details for:

  • Basemaps (with WMTS and ZXY endpoints)
  • Addressing data
  • Geographioc features

There's also a dedicated API for downloading datasets locally called the OS Downloads API which has an associated GitHub repository.

Office for National Statistics (ONS)

The ONS has an Open Geography portal which "provides free and open access to the definitive source of geographic products, web applications, story maps, services and APIs."

This includes Regions, Districts and Wards information as well as postcode hierarchies. Data is available as shapefiles as well as tabular.

DEFRA and Natural England

Publish data through MAGIC which "provides authoritative geographic information about the natural environment from across government. The information covers rural, urban, coastal and marine environments across Great Britain."

As discussed in How to access Natural England's maps and data however there are alternative options such as Downlads and non-open datasets that are "Available on request for projects meeting Natural England’s core purpose".
