Post-Grad Job Search Action Plan
#1: Job Search Plan: Create a schedule & goals
Design a 40-hour "work week" that provides time for:
Monday - Friday: 8:30am: Workout 9:30am - 12:30pm: Outreach/Company Research 1pm - 5pm: Code
Coding Work
- Finish portfolio site
- Push old Turing projects to production
- Keep working on codewars challenges
- Finish reading "You Don't Know JS" series
- Work on side projects
Backwards planning: What is your cut-off for ending the job search? When do you want to receive and sign an offer by?
I am going to be aggressive in my job search. My goal is to have a signed offer by 8/1/17.
Based on what you outlined above, create monthly, weekly, and daily goals in order to reach your big goal.
Daily goal:
- 2 new outreaches per day
- At least 3 commits per day
Weekly:
- At least 1 coffee meeting per week
- Connect with at least one local Turing alum per week
Monthly:
- Get portofilo finished by end of June
- At least 4 coffee meetings
Tech Skills to focus on:
- Webpack
- React
- Node (async JS)
- Explore OAuth
- SASS
What "barriers" tend to hold you back in the job search? What steps will you take to overcome those "barriers"?
I'm not the most outgoing person so cold outreach doesn't come naturally to me. I don't mind having one-on-one conversations, but getting over the hurdle of making the initial outreach can be a challenge for me. With much more free time and knowing I need to be employed ASAP I'm not worried about letting anything obstruct my job hunt.
#2: Longterm Career Plan:
What are your career goals?
My ultimate goal is to be able to work remote and enjoy the flexibility to travel and work from wherever I please.
Where do you want to go in your career?
I want to work for a digital agency where the work and projects are always changing. I really enjoy UI development and creating engaging user experiences. I'd like be on a team that values UX design, user feedback, and A/B testing. I look forward to taking on a leadership role and helping new developers grow their skillset.
Vision statement:
I will become an accomplished React developer with a well rounded skillset set in both front and back end development. I will have the flexibility to work remotely and will be an integral member of development team at a small to mid-size company. To get to this point I will largely focus on deepening my knowledge of React/Redux through side projects and research. I will initially work for an agency-type company to get as much exposure to different types of projects as possible to figure out what I enjoy and excel at.
