I considered buying a carbonator like this one, but was turned off by their proprietary Co2 cartridges and bottles. I decided to go a little more DIY, did a little reading, and here's what I ended up with:
- 10lb. Aluminum Co2 Tank - $86.40
- Co2 Regulator - $42.70
- Co2 fill up from my local AirGas - $25
- "The Carbonator" cap - $13.99 (I got three)
- Ball Lock Disconnect - $6.75
- 10ft. of 1/4" braided vinyl tubing from Home Depot - $10
- 2 hose clamps for the tubing - $1
- Culligan water filter - $18 (this is optional)
The total cost was around $245 when you add in shipping so it should pay for itself in five months. I expect the tank to last around a year and after that refills are just $25.
I've been following these directions and the results are great. Just as fizzy as the store-bought stuff.
