Mah Jong Classic Chinese Scoring, Simplified

  1. Keep track of which groups in the winning hand are concealed and which were open (revealed).
  2. Calculate base points (consider each group one at a time). See base table below. Round up to next 10.
  3. Double the base a number of times to get the score for the round. See doubles table below.
  4. Cap the score at 1000 (the limit).
  5. If the winning tile came from a discard, each player pays the winner their score, and the loser pays double.
  6. If the winning tile came from the wall, all players pay the winner double the score.
  7. Losers do not score their hands.

Round up base score to the next 10. e.g If you got 44, round up to 50 before doubling.

Doubles

Doubles start at 0. (It is possible to win with 0 doubles.) The final doubles number will determine how many times you double the base score.

After doubling a number of times, cap the final score at 1000.

  • 20 for winning
  • +8 for concealed dragon pung
  • +0 for chow
  • +4 for open pung
  • +0 for chow
  • = 32
  • Round up to 40

Doubles

  • 1 for dragon pung
  • 1 for half flush
  • 1 for no flowers
  • = 3 doubles

Score

  • 40 doubled 3 times = 320

Payment (won on a discard)

  • Each player pays winner 320
  • Player who discarded the tile that caused mahjong pays 640

Payment (won from wall)

  • Each player pays winner 640

Simplifications from classic system

  • Removed points and doubles for improbable situations including all limit hands
  • Round base up to next 10 to simplify doubling
  • Do not score losing hands
