Create Erasure Coded CephFS Pools

Part of collection: Hyper-converged Homelab with Proxmox

How to create a Erasure Coded Pool in Ceph and use 'directory pinning' to connect it to the CephFS filesystem.

To use a Erasure Coded Pool with CephFS, a directory inside the CephFS filesystem needs to be connected to a Erasure Coded Pool, this is called 'directory pinning'.

Mount Volumes into Proxmox VMs with Virtio-fs

Part of collection: Hyper-converged Homelab with Proxmox

15-04-2025: Seems Proxmox added this now to the GUI; see Using VirtioFS backed by CephFS for bind mounts how to use it.

Virtio-fs is a shared file system that lets virtual machines access a directory tree on the host. Unlike existing approaches, it is designed to offer local file system semantics and performance. The new virtiofsd-rs Rust daemon Proxmox 8 uses, is receiving the most attention for new feature development.

Performance is very good (while testing, almost the same as on the Proxmox host)

ProxMox Cluster - Soup-to-Nutz

aka what i did to get from nothing to done.

note: these are designed to be primarily a re-install guide for myself (writing things down helps me memorize the knowledge), as such don't take any of this on blind faith - some areas are well tested and the docs are very robust, some items, less so). YMMV

My Docker Swarm Architecture

This (and related gists) captures how i created my docker swarm architecture. This is intended mostly for my own notes incase i need to re-creeate anything later! As such expect some typos and possibly even an error...

Installation Step-by-Step

Each major task has its own gist, this is to help with maitainability long term.

  1. Install Debian VM for each docker host
  2. install Docker
  3. Configure Docker Swarm
  4. Install Portainer
  5. Install KeepaliveD
  6. Using VirtioFS backed by CephFS for bind mounts (migrating from glsuterFS - WIP)

Frigate Notification Blueprint
blueprint:
name: Frigate Notification
description: |
## Frigate Mobile App Notification
This blueprint will send a notification to your device when a Frigate event for the selected camera is fired. The notification will initially include the thumbnail of the detection, but will update to include actionable notifications allowing you to view the saved clip/snapshot when available, or silence the notification for a configurable amount of time.
With this blueprint, you may send the notification to multiple devices by leaving "Device" blank and instead use a [notification group][1].

Walkthrough of what I did to increase performance on my Synology NAS box during an expansion, and afterwards.

Performance on Synology RAIDs

script for use with `nsupdate` to update linux client DNS on a DNS server... in this instance, I am targeting a Windows Server DNS server 2003/2008/2012+. I have manually created the PTR and A records once, and granted the Everyone ACE the "Write" permission in the DACL of the PTR and A records.
